Sharp to unveil smallest flash memory for cell phones

Sharp Corp. has unveiled what the company claims is the world's smallest 32M-bit flash memory for cellular telephone handsets.

The package size of the new 32M-bit flash memory is seven millimeters square (0.27 inches), which is about a 24 percent reduction in area from its previous version, according to Sharp's statement.

As mobile handsets are being used more and more for data services, flash memory for handsets needs to be smaller in size and larger in capacity. The new chip will allow a handset not only to be smaller and lighter but also to hold more memory and thus be more suitable for data services, the company said.

The new flash memory features a "page mode retrieving function", which cuts in half the amount of time taken to display a page on the handset screen. Samples of the chip will be available from this month at 3,000 yen (US$25) and the company plans to start mass production of 1 million units a month at the end of September.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
