Strong iPhone 6s demand leads to wait times of up to 10 weeks

Stronger pre-order sales than last year's models, carriers say

Early indications reveal Apple’s revamped iPhone is a local success with carrier demand exceeding last year’s popular models.

Try to order a 6s Plus in Rose pink from Optus and it’s sold out. Head over to Vodafone’s site and it’s the same story; pre-order stock for a 6s Plus in this colour is exhausted for all capacities, whether it is 16GB, 64GB or 128GB.

Placing an order with Vodafone for sold out models is possible; however, it can take up to 10 weeks for them to be delivered, and that’s only after the order has been approved.

The Rose Gold colour is unique to the 6s series of iPhones. Owning an iPhone in that colour subtly tells it is the latest smartphone from Apple.

Other colours have proven less popular, even though many of them have had their pre-order allocation exhausted.

Carrier pricing is more expensive this year with handset instalments increasing to reflect a weaker Australian dollar. Generally, buying an iPhone on a postpaid plan is six to eight dollars more per month.

Demand for the 6s series of iPhones has been greater than last year’s model in spite of an increase in price, said Ben McIntosh, director of sales at Vodafone.

“Enthusiasm from customers this year is much more significant than last year. We were pleasantly surprised by the response.

"We have seen almost equal demand for the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.

"The most popular variant is 64GB; the most popular colour by far is Rose Gold; and our most popular plan continues to be our $80 Red plan.”

Overwhelming demand last year led to the crashing of carrier websites. Vodafone and Optus have since invested heavily in IT infrastructure in an effort to cope with the load.

“I’m pleased to report there were no major issues this year despite unsurpassed traffic,” McIntosh told Good Gear Guide.

Optus’ IT infrastructure too coped with the surge in traffic in spite of the “overwhelming demand”.

“So far, the $80 My Plan Plus has been popular during pre-orders this year,” said an Optus spokesperson.

Australia's largest carrier, Telstra, politely declined to comment on its pre-order sales performance.

Global iPhone demand is expected to eclipse last year’s demand, Apple said in a statement released to CNBC.

“Customer response to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has been extremely positive and preorders this weekend were very strong around the world.

“We are on pace to beat last year’s 10 million unit first-weekend record when the new iPhones go on sale.”

Exhausting pre-order stock for select models does not necessarily mean customers won’t be able to buy an iPhone in stores when it launches. Carriers generally put stock aside for launch day.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus go on sale in stores on 25 September. Carriers released pricing details last weekend, on Saturday, 5 September.
