Oppo phones sold in almost 1000 retail properties in Australia

Considers opening standalone Oppo stores

Popular Chinese smartphone company Oppo is gaining traction in Australia as its phones are sold in almost 1000 retail properties.

A recent partnership with TeleChoice inched them towards the milestone by adding 38 more stores, said Michael Tran, marketing director of Oppo Mobile Australia.

“Telechoice approached us a few months back. We’ve been in discussions and launching it slowly into the market. We had to work on the promotions first with TeleChoice.”

The company has enjoyed “double digit growth” in the Australian market and is holding discussions with retailers and carriers in an effort to maintain the momentum.

“It’s been such good growth considering we’re not even in JB Hi-Fi and other carriers such as Telstra yet.

“I’m not going to say it’s been easy. It’s been hard to get the support from carriers and retailers. Optus and Dick Smith have taken a big chance on us,” Tran told PCWorld.

Oppo is credited with introducing smartphones with fast charging, a 1440p display and, at one stage, making the thinnest smartphone in the world.

The company has a strong presence in the largest smartphone market in the world, it’s home country of China, where it sells phones from standalone Oppo stores.

“In Southeast Asia, or the Asian cultures where Oppo is doing very well, that’s what our business model is, to open stores.

“It’s just finding that right timing for the Australian market.”

Oppo announced it would open a support centre when it launched in September of 2014. The company has since outsourced repairs to a support centre in Villawood, NSW.

Smartphones were originally sold directly to customers from Oppo’s online store until it partnered with Allphones three month later.

Oppo struck a significant deal with Dick Smith in July of 2015, where 397 Dick Smith retail properties would sell its smartphones, including 28 Powered by Dick Smith zones in David Jones.

Following was an important partnership with Optus. Gaining carrier support would extend Oppo’s reach by ‘some 400’ Optus stores, validate the brand and let customers pay off an Oppo R7 in monthly instalments.

The most recent partnership with TeleChoice involves the sale of three of its smartphones. The Mirror 5S, R7 and R7 Plus are available on 24 month contracts respectively priced at $30, $38 and $43 a month.

A number of smaller partnerships have also been forged, such as its deal with MobileCiti.

Oppo has spent the last 12 months ‘planning and preparing’, said Tran.

“The next two years or so we’re definitely going to give Apple and Samsung a run for their money. We’re creeping up behind them.”
