Sony Mobile launches SmartBand 2

Next-generation wearables provides deep insights on fitness and wellbeing

Sony Mobile has released its next-generation wearable, the SmartBand 2, to the Australian market.

The company said the band is a multi-sensor lifelogger that provides insights about fitness and wellbeing through the same SmartBand modular ‘core’ form factor.

The SmartBand 2 is available in black and white, but as it retains the same ‘core’ footprint as the SmartBand, the new technology can be worn with original first and third party bands that are silicone casing and IP68 waterproofing.

Sony said the new wearable has subtle looks with all-new metal clip.

The wearables accelerometer and heart rate sensors monitor pulse and heart rate variability and automatically tracks physical activity throughout the day including, walking, running and other workouts.

Additionally, it provides sleep insights with automatic sleep detection and the smart alarm clock function aims to wake up the wearer at the best time based on the wearer's sleep cycle.

The band also features pushed alerts from a compatible mobile for missed calls, messages, emails or social media notifications. A user can also control the music on their smartphone or tablet from the band by tapping to play, pause and skip through tracks.

Sony said the band will also vibrate to alert the user when they are more than 10 metres away from their connected Xperia smartphone or tablet.

Sony Mobile head of business development for APAC and market head for Oceania, John Featherstone, said, “We set out to create the most advanced wearable at this section of the market. SmartBand 2 has the capability to deliver, and make biometric data meaningful for users within Lifelog. Not only does it represent a powerful vision of how consumers can learn more about themselves, it allows us to explore exciting new opportunities with development partners.”

It is available from JB Hi-Fi for retail price of $199.
