Google's Nexus 6 gets an official end of life date, and it's mere months away

Google's giant phone will hit the last stop in October, though it doesn't necessarily mean you still won't get future updates.

If a Nexus 6 is your daily driver, it couldn’t hurt to start looking for a new phone.

That’s because Google has updated its official end-of-life timeline for Nexus devices, and the company’s ginormous phone hits the last stop in October, as Android Police first reported.

The just-updated support page for Nexus devices details final end of life information for all of Google’s phones and tablets.

Once your device hits the specified date, Google won’t promise any more updates.

Google guarantees you’ll get Android software updates for at least two years from whenever the device became available in the Google Store. The Nexus 6 was released in November 2014. Security patches are promised for three years from availability or 18 months from when Google last sold the device.

The impact on you: Even though the Nexus 6’s end is nigh, the phone may not need to head straight to the recycling bin. Google often updates devices beyond the end date as evidenced by my 2013 Nexus 7, which still gets monthly security updates and is running the latest build of Marshmallow. It could run out of luck with Android N, but there’s some precedent for a longer lease on life if you just can’t part yet with your Nexus 6.
