LaCie Australia has released what it claims to be the world’s highest capacity portable drives, dubbed the Big Disk. The drives connect to your PC by means of an easy-to-use and speedy (400Mbps) FireWire connection that is stated to have a sustained transfer rate of 30-40MBps.
The drives are targeted at video, audio and multimedia producers or those who simply need a mass storage solution. For example, the 500GB drive could store up to two days of uncompressed digital video and works out to cost about $4 per gigabyte.
The $1899 400GB version runs at 7200rpm with an 8MB buffer. The $2255 500GB (half a terabyte) versions runs at 5400rpm with a 2MB buffer.
The drives can be stacked or can be positioned upright on a removable stand. They can also be rack-mounted using an optional 19in rack-mount kit. Several Big Disks can be configured for mirroring (RAID1) or striping (RAID0).
Big Disks are compatible with Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me and XP, in addition to Mac OS 8.6 right through to OS X 10.2. Windows XP and Mac OS X users don’t even need to install a driver.
