Michelle Rowland has been appointed shadow minister for communications, with Labor leader Bill Shorten today unveiling a new-look shadow ministry

Rowland, the member for Greenway in New South Wales, has previously served as shadow assistant minister for communications before taking on the small business portfolio in the shadow cabinet.

Jason Clare, who formerly held the role, will be shadow minister for resources and northern Australia as well as shadow minister for trade and investment.

Stephen Jones will be shadow minister for regional communications.

Senator Kim Carr has been appointed shadow minister for innovation, industry, science and research, with Tim Hammond taking on the role of shadow assistant minister for innovation. Hammond has also been appointed shadow assistant minister for digital economy and startups.

Ed Husic, the former shadow parliamentary secretary assisting with digital innovation and startups, has been appointed to shadow minister for employment services and workforce participation.

Gai Brodtmann has been given the role of shadow assistant minister for cyber security and defence personnel. The new-look ministry unveiled by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull earlier this week included for the first time a minister assisting the prime minister for cyber security, with Victorian Liberal MP Dan Tehan appointed to the role.

Turnbull’s ministerial reshuffle also included moving Christopher Pyne to the newly created position of minister of defence industry, where he will help oversee Defence’s Integrated Investment Program, which includes a $300m boost for Defence cyber capabilities.

Mike Kelly has been appointed shadow assistant minister for defence industry and support.
