Microsoft is introducing a new home-user version of its free e-mail security news alert service for non-technical users.
The Microsoft Security Update newsletter will include information on new product patches and security issues, the company said Tuesday.
Microsoft intends the newsletter to complement its 5-year-old Microsoft Security Notification Service, which is aimed at IT professionals and offers detailed technical information on security problems and recommended solutions. That service has attracted 300,000 subscribers, according to Microsoft.
Microsoft also offers two online services, Windows Update and Automatic Update, that prompt users to upgrade and patch their systems. The company hopes home users will combine use of those services with a Microsoft Security Update subscription, a representative said.
Subscription information for the Microsoft Security Update newsletter is available at http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/decision.asp.
