Android device updates: Security updates roll out to Moto 360, Sony Smartwatch 3, other watches

Google also pushed the latest security updates to the Android Open Source Project, which means hardware makers can get to work on sending them out.

You know you’re living in the future when your watch needs a software update. That’s the case for a lot of those running Android Wear this week, with some minor but important security updates making their way out to everyone.

It was relatively slow in terms of other updates, but that’s likely because it’s the calm before the Android Nougat storm hits.

Each week, we compile all the major software updates to hit the ecosystem, including phones and tablets on U.S. carriers, unlocked phones, Android Wear smartwatches, and Android TV devices. Making sure your device is running the latest available software is a good housekeeping practice, ensuring you have the latest features with fewer bugs and gaping security holes.

Security updates: A batch of watches are getting the latest security patches. My second-generation Moto 360 received one this week, which brought the July updates (August just became available for developers last week).

It’s likely update time for your Android Wear watch.

Our search uncovered that this has rolled out to the Moto 360 (second generation), Sony Smartwatch 3, LG G Watch R, and LG Watch Urbane. So if one hasn’t shown up, swipe over to the settings and check for updates.

Nexus

Android Security Bulletin: Now that the factory images with the August update are here for Nexus devices, it’s time for everyone else to get in on the fun. The Android Security Bulletin details that the security patches have now been made available for the Android Open Source Project, which is what hardware makers use to build a version of Android for their own phones and tablets.

So if you have a non-Nexus phone, your August security patches may come later in the month.
