iBurst partner Veritel Wireless signs up with Harvey Norman.

 • 02 December, 2004 11:05

Sydney. National ISP Veritel Wireless has signed a deal to sell iBurst wireless broadband access modems through selected Harvey Norman computer stores from 1st December 2004.

iBurst is a new high speed mobile broadband network being built across Australia by Personal Broadband Australia (PBA). The Veritel agreement will cover selected Harvey Norman stores in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

Harvey Norman’s General Manager of Computers and Telecommunications, John Slack-Smith is pleased to see increased competition in wireless broadband leading to greater customer choice. “As the number of laptop sales continues to grow* , it has become correspondingly important for us to offer fully mobile broadband solutions.

“It provides our customers with choice and it gives Harvey Norman new products to offer to our customers,” Slack-Smith said.

Veritel’s managing director, Ivan Hurwitz said, “Veritel was one of the first companies to partner with Personal Broadband Australia to sell the iBurst access solution, and we’ve developed a range of packages to suit different market requirements.

“Harvey Norman is one of Australia’s most dynamic retailers and we are delighted to be working with them to expand the choices for consumers to access mobile wireless broadband.”

Veritel Wireless will be offering access modems off the shelf at Harvey Norman for $199 for the iBurst Access Bridge (fixed/portable modem) and $299 for the iBurst Access Card (mobile modem).

Package choices for the Bridge range from $39.95 for a 256/128kbps connection, $59.95 for 512/256kbps, and $99.95 for 1024/345kbps. All plans feature unlimited usage (with speed reduced to 64k after 5GB download/mth on 256k plan, 10GB/mth on other plans).

Package choices on the Card start at $79.95 for 256/128kbps with 500MB download/mth.

These packages come with no contract, free static IP address and 25 free mailboxes.

Veritel’s Wireless broadband solution is based on PBA’s iBurst service. It provides up to 1Mbit/s downstream and 345Kbit/s upstream to customers throughout much of metropolitan Sydney now, increasing coverage in Melbourne, Brisbane and Gold Coast and other capital cities to follow shortly beginning with Canberra this month.

The iBurst system is driven by smart antenna technology that provides users with mobility at broadband data transfer speeds as they travel through PBA’s carrier-grade, IP-based wireless data network. The service is fully compatible with existing laptops and desktop computers - no upgrades or new computing devices are required to access it.

“The iBurst service is at the cutting edge of what is out there in terms of connectivity” Hurwitz said.

Product availability will expand across Melbourne and Brisbane corresponding with network coverage growth.

* Laptop sales constitute a growing 40 per cent of Harvey’s PC sales. The trend is strongly towards laptops, with desktop PCs forming a smaller and smaller segment of overall sales.
