IFA 2018: Huawei reveal their AI Cube smart speaker

Weeks after Samsung debuted their Bixby-powered Galaxy Home smart speaker, Huawei have now also entered the smart speaker arms race with the new AI Cube.

The hook here is that the AI Cube isn't just a smart speaker: it's also a router. Inside, it boasts both a LTE Cat 6 modem and a 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapter. It's sort of similar to what ASUS are attempting to do with the Lyra Voice. And, much the Lyra, Huawei have opted for built-in Alexa support over the Google Assistant.

The company say the AI Cube "represents a new, more natural and convenient way for consumers to connect to the internet and control smart devices, while delivering high quality audio in a compact form factor featuring a minimalist design."

Beyond that, the 15W smart speaker looks very similar to the Google Home - only sightly taller and bulkier. Huawei say that a proprietary audio technology called Huawei Histen will enrich the smart speaker "by including virtual bass, linear phase equalizer, adaptive gain control, far-field voice recognition and more." What that enrichment really looks - and sounds - like in the real world is a bit of an unknown quantity.

At the moment, the Huawei AI Cube is only confirmed for Europe.

PC World Australia reached out to Huawei Australia for comment and were told that, at this stage, the Huawei AI Cube has no confirmed local availability and pricing for Australia.
