EA’s Battlefield V doesn’t technically hit the streets until November 20, but it’s already the first game to support real-time ray tracing using Microsoft’s new DirectX Raytracing API. Nvidia’s radical new GeForce RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti graphics cards include dedicated hardware devoted to improving ray tracing performance.
The traditional game rendering technique, called rasterization, is much faster than real-time ray tracing but fakes how light and shadows behave by converting a game’s 3D models into pixels on your 2D screen, then applying textures and color information after. Real-time ray tracing mimics how light behaves in the real world by mapping out rays that originate from 3D illumination sources in a scene. Real-time ray tracing delivers much more realistic imagery as a result, but it’s much more computationally expensive. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX graphics cards are the first GPUs capable of handling ray tracing at a reasonable clip, and only with the help of those dedicated hardware RT cores.
And now Battlefield V is the first game to support the technology, as EA Origin Access subscribers can play the game now ahead of its official release. Check out the trailer below to see how much of an impact ray tracing can have on the game’s visuals.
Getting access to the newfangled luxurious eye candy requires jumping through some hoops though. In addition to being an EA Origin Access subscriber with the latest BFV build installed, you’ll need Nvidia’s new GeForce 416.94 drivers, as well as the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, which just became available yesterday after being yanked from publication last month. You’ll also need a compatible GeForce RTX graphics card, of course.
Once you’ve satisfied all those requirements, you’ll see a “DXR enabled” option in Battlefield V’s advanced video options. DirectX Raytracing runs on DirectX 12, so be sure to activate that, too. You’ll also find a “DXR raytrace reflections quality” option that lets you choose how intense the effect is, from Low to Ultra. Battlefield V’s DXR implementation only affects reflections, and not shadows or any other lighting effects.
Expect DXR to crank up the eye candy (be sure to check out the reflections in windows and water!) while dialing back frame rates, though it remains to be seen just how much real-time ray tracing affects BFV’s performance. The frame rate hit appears significant in Guru3D’s quick initial tests with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. Look for our own in-depth Battlefield V ray tracing tests to land soon.
