AppForge announces support for Series 60, Palm OS5

AppForge Inc. launched a new version of its Visual Basic development tool this week that includes support for Palm Inc.'s OS 5 and for Nokia Corp. Series 60 mobile phones.

This means developers can create an application once using MobileVB 4.0 and then use it across different devices including the latest Palm PDAs (personal digital assistants) and Nokia phones, AppForge said Tuesday in a statement.

AppForge in Atlanta has also removed the license fee for its Booster operating system extension that allows devices to run the applications, Dama Mark, AppForge's director of pubic relations said Wednesday.

The removal of the fee should increase the uptake of the Booster extension, making MobileVB more attractive to developers, AppForge said.

AppForge has worked closely with Nokia and Palm in developing the new version of Mobile VB, Mark said. "We already supported all the older versions of the Palm OS and the Series 80 software used in Nokia's Communicator," she said.

MobileVB is mostly used by games developers and developers working in entertainment and educational fields, Mark said.

MobileVB 4.0 will be available from October and will cost US$899, AppForge said. Any customer who has bought the previous version since Sept. 1 will receive a free upgrade, while other registered users can upgrade for US$249, the company said.
