New support for Memory Stick expected on Monday

Sony Corp.'s Memory Stick flash memory card technology is expected to get a boost on Monday when Japanese PC maker Sotec Co. Ltd. announces support for the format.

The company is expected to detail plans for Memory Stick-enabled products at a Sony event in Tokyo on Monday. South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., which has already announced support for the format, is also expected to reveal its future plans for products at the same event, which will be attended by senior executives from the two companies and Sony.

Sony is expected to unveil its plans for the Memory Stick Duo, a shortened version of the chewing-gum stick-sized Memory Stick designed for use in small, portable products such as MP3 players, digital still cameras and cellphones. The card was first announced in April 2000 and, at the time, Sony said it hoped to commercialize the device in early 2001, however no products supporting the card have yet been announced by the Tokyo company.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
