Logical makes a mobility connection

Systems integrator Logical has teamed up with Cisco and real estate firm, Colliers International, to create Australia’s first commercial office with built-in wireless connectivity.

The four-storey, 2000sqm heritage site on Kent Street, in Sydney’s CBD, is currently undergoing refurbishment but will be open for tenants in October.

Logical has been responsible for configuring the system and design specifications, will distribute bandwidth and manage security as tenants come on board and provide consultancy services as well as ongoing support for those wanting to link the Wi-Fi environment to existing networks.

“Revenues in wireless are less significant than in IP telephony, security and storage but there are huge revenues in services to support businesses as they integrate existing services into mobile environments,”Logical managing director, Stuart Hendry, said.

“Mobility is a bigger issue than wireless alone and, as it becomes more widespread, IT solutions will become more varied and will be a huge growth area for integrators.”

The network is based on a combination of Cisco’s Catalyst 2950 and 3550 Series switches and 1200 Series Aironet Access Points, that support the 11Mbps data rate of 802.11b but can be upgraded to the 54Mbps of the 802.11a standard.

Each tenant will have control of its own Internet security policies through virtual local area networks (VLAN), independent of other tenants or visitors.

A demonstration of the network will be set up in the foyer of the building for prospective tenants to view before deciding whether they want to implement it.

“This development means Wi-Fi technology is now available to tenants in the same way as traditional utilities like water, air-conditioning or power,” channels and commercial director for Cisco A/NZ, Kip Cole, said.

Colliers International is to open another but much bigger commercial office at a 7000sqm heritage site on St Kilda Road, Melbourne, in November.

It will offer the same wireless network in conjunction with Cisco and Logical.
