Linux thin client performance optimistic

22 September 2003

Wyse Technology believes Linux will continue to perform strongly in the server based computing domain, prompting its release of two Linux-based Winterm devices in Australia and New Zealand this month.

Market figures show that the Linux thin client market rapidly expanded last year, growing 82 percent worldwide (IDC). If this rate continues, Wyse Technology expects Linux be the most popular thin client platform by 2006.

“With an increase in testing of open source applications and growth in the Linux thin client market, the timely release of these two Winterm thin clients means we are well equipped to support channel and government demand,” said Mark Economos, Wyse Technology’s Senior Solutions Engineer.

Mr. Economos said the Winterm 5125XE provides a powerful and reliable low-cost thin client to run server-based UNIX, Linux and Java applications, while the Winterm 5455XL offers this and has the added flexibility to run Java applications on the desktop.

“As the Winterm 5455XL combines PC-like performance with the benefits of all Wyse Winterm thin clients, such as security and manageability, it gives IT managers a wider variety of hardware and software configurations to chose from,” he said.

The low-cost Winterm 5125XE extends Wyse Technology’s Powerful platform and is priced at $669 for a flash/RAM memory configuration of 32/64MB RAM. The Winterm 5455XL, which strengthens the Flexible platform, is priced at $899 for 64MB flash and 128MB RAM. Both offer customisation with myriad peripheral options including CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, additional RAM and wireless Wi-Fi 802.11b.
