Management Software Critical Component to IT as a Strategic Enabler, Finds IDC

 • 18 November, 2004 15:03

NORTH SYDNEY 18 November 2004 – IDC's recent research study titled, "Australia Infrastructure Management Software Forecast, 2004-2008," found that CIOs and IT managers are in greater need of management software than ever before. Software solutions that free up time and resources to deliver IT as a service to the business, will be critical to making IT a strategic enabler.

IDC's study, has revealed, despite the growing interest and need for effective IT management, growth rates are somewhat modest for system management software, although these growth rates are skewed by the decline in the mainframe management market.

"Stronger growth sectors in the system management market include help desk, change and configuration management, and performance and availability software, particularly in the mid-market. Network management is expected to show strong growth across the board as IT users demand high availability and performance from the network infrastructure."

"The strongest growth in this market will come from security software as integrated solutions continue to evolve. The system software market is expected to decline in the forecast period due to bundling of hardware and system software as well as the strong uptake in Linux to manage core infrastructure," said Megan Dahlgren, Senior Analyst, Software.

"CIOs and IT managers are under pressure to "fight fires" everyday managing the existing infrastructure, lower costs, face increasing complexity at the same time as deliver IT resources to an increasing number of stakeholders, both internal and external, securely and with high availability and performance.

"It is safe to say these champions within IT are facing a near impossible task. This is where management software comes in as a key component to helping CIOs and IT managers in achieving the alignment of IT and the business", said Megan Dahlgren, Senior Analyst, Software.

The large solution vendors who can provide end-to-end management solutions are likely to be the biggest winners in response to these trends with best-of-breed players poised either for acquisition or possibly be made redundant by fully integrated solution offerings," added Megan Dahlgren, Senior Analyst, Software.
