Cakewalk’s new software music studio, Project5, should now be available. Aiming to complement rather than outright replace the company’s existing flagship audio/MIDI sequencing software, Sonar 2.2, Project5 is similar to Propellerhead Software’s popular Reason virtual software studio (which itself has just moved to version 2.5).
Billed as a soft synth workstation, Project5 attempts to extend on the virtual instrument ‘rack’ metaphor by integrating comprehensive sequencing abilities, in addition to the normal visual tools that can be tweaked using a mouse and appear as though they were real instruments. Included tools include a virtual analog synth, digital sampler, drum sampler, drum synth, groove sampler, pattern and loop based sequencing tools, plus various effects and processors and dedicated mixing views. Advanced synth layering and keyboard mapping has been implemented to support widespread automation and ReWire (See here for a screenshot).
Interestingly for Cakewalk, VST instruments and effects will now be supported in addition to standards such as the DirectX and MFX formats. WDM, ASIO and DirectSound sound card drivers will also be supported.
