AAT Kings Tours settles with BSAA for $60,000

 • 30 June, 2003 15:38

Major national tours and travel group, AAT Kings Tours, has settled with the Business Software Association of Australia (BSAA) after Federal Court proceedings for illegal software use, paying $60,000 in legal costs and damages.

AAT Kings operates bus-touring services in Australia and also acts as a ticketing and booking agent for a number of Australian airlines and resorts. The company has its head office in Melbourne and numerous sales offices and bus depots around Australia.

AAT Kings Tours was investigated by the BSAA for the illegal use of Symantec software, after a report to its Hotline with very specific details of licence infringements.

BSAA Chairman, Jim Macnamara, said the AAT Kings’ case demonstrated the false economy of using unlicensed software.

“Purchasing the appropriate software licenses at the outset would have cost the company around $23,000, but instead they have incurred $60,000 in legal costs and damages,” he said.

Mr Macnamara said illegal software use was sometimes inadvertent. “But even unintentional breaches of copyright occur through mismanagement. Companies manage a range of assets. The BSAA and software companies are adamant that, in the information age, software is an important asset that should be used legally.

“All companies and organisations should take proactive steps to manage their software licenses. The BSAA offer free resources on its Web site at www.bsaa.com.au to assist in this and has been conducting education campaigns nationally for more than a decade. We are trying to work with businesses and help them comply, but when major breaches of software licences are found, we cannot ignore it,” Mr Macnamara said.

BSAA software asset management tools and resources are available on its Web site at www.bsaa.com.au.
