Toshiba Portege R100
The ultra-svelte Portege R100 always seems to excite people who see it. The use of a Pentium-M processor (running at 900MHz) has helped Toshiba whittle the R100 down to 15mm thick and just 1.1kg in weight.
Using a 12.1in display, the R100 comes with 256MB of DDR SDRAM, a 40GB hard disk and Windows XP Professional. Being a Centrino platform, the notebook has built-in Wi-Fi capabilities and ships complete with Toshiba’s ConfigFree software to help users get wireless networking up and running. Integrated Ethernet and modem connectors enhance connectivity further. Graphics are delivered by means of an Intel 855PM chipset. A slot for Secure Digital card media is incorporated and the PC Card slot can be used with the optional $850 external CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.
Toshiba states that up to six and a half hours can be achieved through use of a second battery (supplied as part of the package). A three-year warranty is standard.

Sony Vaio PCG-Z1GP
Sony’s first model to adopt the Centrino platform, the PCG-Z1GP harnesses a speedy 1.3GHz Pentium-M processor that runs in conjunction with 256MB of DDR SDRAM. When closed, the notebook measures 23.8mm and weighs about 2.1kg (including battery).
Although still lightweight, the Z1GP is slightly larger than the two notebooks discussed above, but Sony has put this to good use by implementing a 14.1in display (capable of 1400x1050), a 16MB DDR ATI Radeon graphics controller, a spacious 60GB hard disk, and a DVD-RW drive so you can burn DVDs as well as CDs.
Ports include two USB 2.0 and single FireWire, headphone, microphone, Ethernet and 56Kbps modem. Being a Centrino notebook, Wi-Fi is implemented. A Memory Stick media slot is integrated and the Z1GP’s larger form factor supports one Type III or two Type I/II PC Cards. Sony touts the model’s battery life to be four to seven hours. The company always provides a wealth of its own multimedia software. A one-year warranty is standard and can be extended for an additional three months upon registration.
