Optus reduces cable prices

Optus has confirmed that OptusNet cable customers on 5GB and 10GB plans will have their subscription prices reduced from August 1.

Optus will also increase the download limit in an attempt to gain high volume customers.

The telco will not charge for excess usage, but instead will continue to slow the service down once limits are reached.

The prices of the 5GB and 10GB plans will decrease and plan allowances of these plans will increase.

Optus corporate affairs manager, Melissa Favero, told ARN the price reduction and download limit increase is a reward for high-end users.

“The changes are a reward for heavy users of OptusNet cable,” she said. “The majority of these high end customers have been subscribing to Optus since the early stages of cable Internet.”

Favero said that customers were prepared to pay high subscription fees for speed and quality of service.

“The majority of Optus’ Internet users are relatively low-end so this reduction in price is incentive for the heavy users,” he said.

According to Favero, in the past few months Optus had achieved record sales for OptusNet cable.

As previously reported in ARN, the telco has recently passed the 100,000 customer milestone for broadband users.

OptusNet has grown at a rate of more than three times that of the total internet market, according to ACNeilsen.

The price changes that will come into effect at August 1 are:

Prices as part of an Optus Choices bundle - OptusNet Pro 5GB for $134.95 per month changes to OptusNet Pro 6GB for $99.95 per month; OptusNet Ultimate 10GB for $265.95 per month changes to OptusNet Ultimate 15GB for $239.95 per month.

Prices as a Stand Alone product - OptusNet Pro 5GB for $154.95 per month changes to OptusNet Pro 6GB for $129.95 per month; OptusNet Ultimate 10GB for $305.95 per month changes to OptusNet Ultimate15GB for $299.95.
