Delloitte Touche Tohmatsu Deploys Intel® Centrino™ Mobile Technology For A Mobile Workforce

 • 07 August, 2003 10:59

News Release

SYDNEY, August 7 2003 - Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, one of the world’s leading professional services organisations, has replaced 2,000 of its Australian fleet of notebook computers with Intel® Centrinoä mobile technology-based notebooks.

According to Deloitte, the deployment of Intel Centrino-based notebooks across 85 per cent of its business will integrate wireless capability and network accessibility into its existing mobile workforce. Deloitte expects the rollout to enhance productivity, reduce costs and simplify the company’s IT infrastructure.

The nature of Deloitte’s business demands that its people have access to its network, regardless of location. However, the complexity and time involved in accessing the network via a traditional dial-up connection when travelling, at an external meeting or client site was unreliable and often counter-productive.

“With a highly mobile workforce, Intel Centrino mobile technology will enable our people to be connected to the Deloitte community as needed, irrespective of location,” said Tim Fleming, Chief Information Officer, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.

“Wireless connectivity and the value-added performance capabilities of Intel Centrino-based notebooks will ensure our people have access to the most up-to-date information and applications, bringing performance and productivity benefits to our people as well as increasing their ability to service our clients effectively.”

The Intel Centrino-based notebook deployment is part of a strategy to upgrade the firm’s existing notebooks to bring the firm added performance and capabilities now and into the future. Initially examining purely a mobile PC upgrade, Deloitte recognised the potential cost reductions and productivity increases it could realise through wireless connectivity.

“With consultants often travelling and moving between client sites, one of the crucial requirements when selecting Intel Centrino mobile technology-based systems was a durable notebook that was easily portable in the field and that could offer extended battery life for long usage periods,” said Fleming.

The long battery life, integrated wireless connectivity, flexible form factor and high performance of Intel Centrino mobile technology offered Deloitte a robust solution that met the requirements of its mobile users. Deloitte also recognised that beyond the immediate benefits it would experience, an upgrade to wireless would offer future opportunities as mobile technologies continued to be developed.

“Deloitte’s deployment of Intel Centrino mobile technology will enable its people to realise the benefits of seamless access to data and applications from wherever they work,” said David Bolt, General Manager, Intel Australia. “The combination of wireless technology with Intel Centrino features such as extended battery life, thinner and lighter notebook designs, and unsurpassed mobile performance will provide greater flexibility, accessibility and enable greater workforce productivity.”

According to IDC, investment in wireless technologies in Australia will reach $108 million by 2005, driven by integrated technology such as Intel Centrino mobile technology. Joel Martin, Research Director, Infrastructure and Communications, IDC Australia said, “Organisations will deploy wireless networks in offices enabling workers to gain access to corporate networks through local 'hot spots' emerging in airports, cafes and other locations. This will result in knowledge workers achieving never before seen instant access to online services for work and pleasure using high frequency, shared spectrum connections.”

The Centrino-based notebooks will be rolled out across 12 Deloitte offices around Australia with full implementation expected to be complete by September.
