Adobe to buy photo software shop

Publishing software maker Adobe Systems Inc. announced Wednesday that it has acquired a privately held maker of digital photography software.

Fotiva Inc., which makes software that enables users to manage, store, modify and share digital photographs over the Internet, will become part of Adobe's Graphics Business Unit, both companies said. Adobe will absorb some of Fotiva's employees, said Adobe spokeswoman Holly Campbell. Campbell would not say how many employees would be absorbed. Fotiva employed fewer than 20 people prior to the acquisition.

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Adobe made the acquisition to beef up its portfolio of software products for editing and managing digital images, a market Adobe is in already with its PhotoShop and PhotoDeluxe products.

Founded in February 2000 under the name PhotoTablet Inc., the company changed its name to Fotiva in October. Based in Santa Rosa, California, Fotiva received US$4 million in funding from venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates and private investors. The company has yet to release a commercial product or details about its digital photo software.

Adobe said it plans to release a new software product for managing and sharing digital images using the technology acquired from Fotiva. No shipping date was available for any new release, Campbell said.
