RealNetworks has completed its purchase of Listen.com Inc., creator of the Rhapsody music service, allowing the company to turn up its digital music offerings.
The completed purchase, announced Tuesday, supplements Real's RealOne SuperPass media subscription service with the addition of the RealOne Rhapsody service launched in May.
Rhapsody boasts a music library of over 350,00 tracks for on-demand listening and more than 240,000 songs which can be burned to a CD, Real said. Songs can be burned at US$0.79 a track, mirroring other popular online music services such as Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes.
The service also allows users to program music to their tastes and read editorial reviews and other related content. Real said that the Listen.com purchase comes as a fitting supplement to its existing online radio and jukebox products.
After the Seattle, Washington company launched RealOne Rhapsody, the service delivered more than 12.4 million on-demand songs to listeners in July, representing a 13 percent increase over June, Real said.
Real announce its intention to buy Listen for roughly $36 million in cash and stock last April.
The company is currently offering RealOne Rhapsody through http://www.real.com for US$9.95 a month. The service is also available through the company's distribution partners,
