UnitedLinux products make debut at Comdex

Four Linux vendors collaborating on a common operating system will announce Tuesday the availability of their first commercial release, called UnitedLinux 1.0, according to information from member companies.

Accompanying the release of UnitedLinux 1.0, The SCO Group, formerly Caldera International Inc., is expected to release SCO Linux Server 4.0, a server version of its operating system powered by UnitedLinux 1.0.

SCO is a member of UnitedLinux along with Conectiva S.A., in Curitiba, Brazil, SuSE Linux AG, in Nuremberg, Germany, and Turbolinux Inc., which recently was acquired by a Tokyo software maker. Each of these vendors will release a separate server software product based on the core operating system, adding their own set of unique features on top of the common base.

Since the beta version of UnitedLinux was released on Sept. 23, more than 15,000 copies of the software have been downloaded, the companies say. The group unveiled an early beta version in August. [See, "UnitedLinux ready for testers," Aug. 13.]

UnitedLinux Version 1.0 will be compliant with the LSB (Linux Standards Base), a set of technical requirements managed by the Free Software Group, the group has said. The operating system will also have broad support for languages, including Japanese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Hungarian.

The companies have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday at Comdex, where they plan to announce the latest news from the group. Joining them in the press conference will be top Linux executives from Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp., according to an invitation to the press event.

SuSE, whose server operating system was chosen as the foundation of UnitedLinux, is also expected to further detail its plans for a corporate desktop Linux operating system, according to information provided by the company. It has previously announced plans to release a desktop operating system that can run Microsoft Windows applications.
