CanoScan N1220U

The CanoScan N1220U is an ultra-slim A4 USB scanner weighing approximately 1.5kg, with dimensions of 256mm x 372.5mm x 34mm. It will fit into most standard laptop bags (sub-notebooks excluded). The unit is dark grey with a metallic lid. No power supply is included, because the N1220U draws all the power it needs from your USB port. A sliding lock device under the main body locks the scanner head into place for travel.

This scanner is of the flatbed variety, using a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanning element and three-colour LED light source. Optical resolution is very impressive at 1200 x 2400dpi, although this can be adjusted via the user-friendly ScanGear CS-U driver. The use of 42-bit sensing technology results in very clear and well-defined colour output. Although a full-resolution full-page colour scan may take as long as eight minutes, in real life most scans will be much shorter, since for most purposes you wouldn't need more than 300 to 600dpi.

On the very front of the scanner is a one-touch launch button that activates the ScanGear ToolBox CS software that sends your scanned data directly to your printer, e-mail program or other program of your choice.

Bundled software is great and includes Adobe Photoshop Le for image editing, ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2000 for photo editing, ArcSoft PhotoBase for electronic photo album creation and Caere OmniPage for optical character recognition (OCR). All up, this unit gives excellent value for money for those looking for an affordable, personal, portable, no-bother scanning solution.
