Head of AMD's processor unit resigns

Effective immediately, Hector Ruiz, AMD's president and chief operating officer, will serve as the acting head of the Computation Products Group, the chip maker said in a statement. The group is responsible for producing AMD's Athlon and Duron families of processors that recently have been gaining ground against Intel's offerings in the PC market.

AMD did not disclose details about why Hollatz had left the company, saying only that he had resigned to pursue other interests.

Sales of PC processors now make up nearly half of AMD's total revenue, Ruiz said in the statement.

Later this year, the company plans to introduce several new processors, targeted at mobile, workstation and server applications, he added.

The company said it is on target to ship 3.6 million Athlon and Duron processors in the current quarter, and expects shipments to double to reach 7.2 million units in this year's fourth quarter.
