COMPUTEX - Taiwan's FIC shows off tiny computer

FIC's GE2 computer uses laptop components to offer a small size and greater portability.

There are small computers, and then there's First International Computer's (FIC's) very-slim GE2.

Built using laptop components, the desktop GE2 measures in at 172mm x 226mm x 42mm. By comparison, Apple Computer's Mac Mini, which has become a benchmark for small computers, measures 165mm x 165mm x 51mm. Both systems weigh in at 1.3kg.

Given the GE2's size and weight, FIC doesn't expect these systems to simply sit on a desk.

The computers were billed as Mobile on Desktop, and can be easily carried around by users, a sales manager at FIC, Flora Lu, said.

The GE2, which was displayed at the Computex exhibition in Taipei, runs an Intel. Core Duo processor and can support up to 2GB of DDR2 (double data rate 2) RAM. The systems are designed around Intel's Viiv platform for home entertainment computers. The computer offers Wi-Fi support and other handy features, such as a four-in-one reader for removable memory cards.

FIC is a contract manufacturer and will produce the GE2 for other companies.

The systems would be available later this year for around $US1100 dollars, Lu said.

Computex runs through June 10.

It’s easy to set up, it’s compact and quiet when printing and to top if off, the print quality is excellent. This is hands down the best printer I’ve used for printing labels.

The print quality also does not disappoint, it’s clear, bold, doesn’t smudge and the text is perfectly sized.
