Ernst & Young standardise on Enterasys Secure Networks As part of $5M IP telephony deal

 • 26 October, 2004 14:41

Ernst and Young Australia have backed Enterasys’ Secure Networks technology, signing a $2.5million deal to roll out an end-to-end Enterasys data network as part of an overall $5million IP telephony implementation.

After an extensive evaluation process the Enterasys’ Matrix C2 switches and Secure Networks technology were selected for deployment nationally through Ernst & Young’s offices. It is the first worldwide implementation of Enterasys’ Matrix C2 triple-speed stackable switches with Power over Ethernet (PoE).

According to Stephen Arnold, CIO of Ernst & Young Australia, the tender was split into separate voice and data components to allow the company to identify the most effective, reliable and secure IP telephony solution available. The ability to deliver business productivity improvements and IT system efficiencies were considered mandatory.

“We are certain we have the best of breed in data network technology with Enterasys. No other vendor was able to deliver on our high-level security and redundancy requirements, whilst also supporting our extensive voice requirements. These were the critical points of differentiation,” said Mr Arnold.

“We wanted a standards based system, so we weren’t interested in a proprietary combined IP solution. Splitting the tender has allowed us to identify the best technologies in each sector,” he said.

Ernst & Young Australia will deploy the Enterasys data network in phases. The first phase, which will commence in October, will involve a complete fit out of the company’s new headquarters in Sydney’s World Square Tower and its new offices in Perth. Ninety Matrix C2 stackable high speed switches with PoE will be deployed at the network edge, enabling Ernst & Young to deploy its VoIP handsets and other peripherals. Matrix N7’s will sit at the core of the network and are connected to the C2’s via multiple Gigabit Ethernet links. Enterasys XSR routers handle the WAN connectivity.

During the second phase, the Secure Networks components will be deployed. This will include the development of a full Security Model by developing an Acceptable Use Policy and User Authentification scheme by the deploying the NetSight® Atlas management platform.

Subsequent phases of the rollout, which will take place in early 2005, will include a complete fit out of Ernst & Young Australia’s offices in Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, Townsville and Gold Coast with a further 80 Matrix C2 switches, as well as Matrix N7’s and XSR’s.

“Network security has become critically important to us, but it must be implemented in a way which doesn’t slow down our business,” said Mr Arnold. “We have selected Matrix C2 switches to bring the full benefit of Secure Networks to the edge of our network. The C2 – combined with Enterasys switches at the distribution layer and core, and granular policy control – gives us an unmatched dynamic security posture that grows and adjusts with the firm while enabling us to increase network and business performance.”

“We envisage an increasing number of Australian enterprises will adopt the Enterasys Secure Network framework for IP telephony solutions as they seek out open enterprise convergence architectures that can also integrate security capability throughout the network as an embedded service,” said Gary Mitchell, MD of Enterasys.

The Enterasys Matrix C2 is an advanced Gigabit Stackable switch. It provides Layer 2 switching at Gigabit speeds, combined with Layer 3 routing capability and Layer 2-4 packet classification. Combined with the security features and network management technology common to the Matrix family, the Matrix C2 provides an alternative to the chassis-based systems. Its PoE option supports converged applications such as VoIP.

The Enterasys Secure Networks Advantage

Enterasys’ industry-leading Secure Networks technology and solutions provide the highest infrastructure security available today. Secure Networks delivers the most granular level of security, providing visibility and control down to the network device, individual user and application level. This enables enterprises to quickly and easily detect, assess, locate and protect against attacks. This unmatched security comes from the integrated policy-based management software architecture that works with the embedded security capabilities Enterasys designs into its entire product line. This unique approach offers significant operational and business benefits, unmatched by vendor offerings that add hardware or software to multiple network access points in an attempt to increase security. In fact, Secure Networks technology can even make networks with competitors’ equipment more secure.

Some risks and uncertainties that may cause actual results to differ materially from these forward-looking statements include, but are not limited to: worldwide and regional economic uncertainty and recent political and social turmoil may continue to negatively affect our business and revenue; we have a history of losses in recent years and may not operate profitably in the future; our quarterly operating results may fluctuate, which could cause us to fail to meet quarterly operating targets and result in a decline in our stock price; we earn a substantial portion of our revenue for each quarter in the last month of each quarter, which reduces our ability to accurately forecast our quarterly results and increases the risk that we will be unable to achieve previously forecasted results; we continue to introduce new products, and if our customers delay product purchases or choose alternative solutions, or if sales of new products are not sufficient to offset declines in sales of older products, our revenue could decline, we may incur excess and obsolete inventory charges, and our financial condition could be harmed; we may be unable to upgrade our indirect distribution channels or otherwise enhance our selling capabilities, which may hinder our ability to grow our customer base and increase our revenue; we have experienced significant changes in senior management and our current management team has been together for only a limited time, which could limit our ability to achieve our objectives and effectively operate our business; there is intense competition in the market for enterprise network equipment, which could prevent us from increasing our revenue and achieving profitability; a portion of the enterprises we sell to rely in whole or in part on public funding and often face significant budgetary pressure, and if these customers must delay, reduce or forego purchasing from us, our revenues could be harmed; we depend upon a limited number of contract manufacturers for substantially all of our manufacturing requirements, and the loss of any of our primary contract manufacturers would impair our ability to meet the demands of our customers; and those additional risks and uncertainties discussed in our most recent filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including our annual report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended January 3, 2004.
