Symantec to Support Linux on Power with High Availability and Backup Solutions

Joint Symantec and IBM Solutions Reduce Cost and Complexity in the Data Centre

AUSTRALIA, Sydney - 13 June 2006 – Symantec today announced an agreement with IBM that provides for the delivery of Symantec high availability, storage management, and backup products for the Linux on POWER platform by the end of 2006. These solutions will help clients consolidate Linux applications on the IBM System pTM platform, leveraging the benefits of IBM’s leading System p hardware platform and Symantec’s leading data center infrastructure software.

The announcement is another example of Symantec’s commitment to support all major UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms in the data centre, enabling customers to standardise on a consistent software infrastructure across heterogeneous environments.

"Enterprise customers are looking for solutions that help them to reduce the cost and complexity of their data centre environments,” said Richard Villars, vice president of Storage Systems at IDC. "For those companies that are looking to Linux-based solutions like the Linux on POWER portfolio from IBM as part of these efforts, the ability to use standard storage management solutions like those from Symantec provides the assurance that addition of Linux will simplify the environment, not make it more complex."

The deal extends the strong engineering relationship between the two companies that began in April 2000. In addition, IBM will resell Symantec’s Veritas Cluster Server and the Veritas Storage Foundation family of products with IBM System p servers for AIX and Linux on POWERTM in the U.S. Federal and Japan markets.

The addition of Symantec’s high availability and storage management software, including Veritas Cluster Server, Veritas Storage Foundation, Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC, and Veritas Volume Replicator to the IBM resell portfolio of System p software significantly enhances IBM’s ability to offer clients integrated solutions in the key market segments of U.S. Federal and Japan. The agreement also includes a commitment by Symantec to port these products and Veritas NetBackup Enterprise backup and recovery technology to the Linux on POWER platform.

“Responding to the strong demand for a robust enterprise solution set for Linux on POWER, IBM has entered into this agreement with Symantec,” said Ross Mauri, General Manager, IBM System p. “We believe the Symantec products will add even more value to what already is one of the most cost-effective and robust server lines on the market.”

Symantec’s Data Center Foundation products are available across all major UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms. Veritas Cluster Server helps reduce application downtime and protect a variety of server and application environments, ranging from a single database instance to globally dispersed clusters. Veritas Storage Foundation provides data centre-wide visibility into the storage environment, with power to control and manage that environment. Veritas Volume Replicator provides a robust storage-independent disaster recovery solution by replicating data over any IP network, to maximise data protection and application availability. Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle® RAC greatly enhances the management and reliability of Oracle RAC environments.

“Symantec is committed to offering the broadest platform support in the industry for our Data Center Foundation solutions,” said Rob Soderbery, senior vice president, data centre management group at Symantec. “This new agreement builds on Symantec’s strong engineering relationship with IBM, extending it to the System p servers. Through support of all leading hardware platforms, the Symantec Data Center Foundation reduces cost and complexity for customers by enabling data centre wide standardisation on a single infrastructure software platform.”

Benefits to U.S Federal Sector

These Symantec solutions, available on IBM’s POWER platform, are well-positioned to help the U.S. federal government community improve the integrity, performance, and assured recovery of critical IT assets benefiting citizen service, law enforcement, and national security.

According to a May 2006 U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, federal continuity of operations, or “COOP,” capabilities are urgently required to mitigate the risk of disruptions stemming from terrorist attacks, severe weather events and building-level contingencies such as the removal of hazardous substances (GAO 06-713 Continuity of Operations). By improving the management of complex storage tasks and streamlining administration of IT resources, Veritas Storage Foundation helps address the control and operational efficiency objectives of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) Circular A-123. Simultaneously, Veritas Volume Replicator and Cluster Server help critical IT systems remain at peak performance during disasters and other crises, fulfilling key recommendations issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in its Federal Preparedness Guide 65 (FPC-65: Federal Executive Branch Continuity of Operations).

Availability

Symantec offerings for Linux on POWERTM will be available worldwide and will be resold by IBM in the U.S. Federal and Japan markets. These offerings are expected to be available by the end of 2006. For more information, please visit www.ibm.com.
