New offering enables standardisation of data centre infrastructure software

AUSTRALIA, Sydney - 31 May 2006 - Symantec Corp. today announced the only integrated solution that enables enterprises to standardise on a consistent software infrastructure across heterogeneous application, database, server and storage platforms. The Symantec Data Center Foundation incorporates Veritas NetBackup, Veritas Storage Foundation, Veritas Server Foundation and Veritas i3 application performance management, and leverages a common integration platform across the product families. Enterprises will be able to replace dozens of different tools with the Symantec Data Center Foundation, enabling protection and availability of critical information and applications, improved utilisation of storage and server hardware assets, and enhanced visibility and control of complex data centre environments.

The need for a better approach to manage the data centre infrastructure is clear: the demands on data centres are growing dramatically, budgets and staff levels are essentially flat, and data centres are becoming so complex, they are virtually unmanageable. With the Symantec Data Center Foundation, Symantec plans to provide a comprehensive range of critical technologies - data protection and data management, storage tiering, server and storage consolidation, data migration, storage capacity management, server automation, application availability, and disaster recovery - designed to help IT take proactive control of the data centre, drive down costs and increase service levels.

"DHL serves more than 220 countries across the globe and our IT infrastructure must be reliable and efficient to support these operations. As a result of our growth, our data centre environment has grown increasingly complex, and at the same time, information availability is more crucial than ever to our IT operations," said Gary Clark, CTO and head of infrastructure services, DHL. "Standardising on Symantec data centre management products has helped us reduce cost and complexity to create a more agile IT infrastructure, while ensuring the availability of our mission critical data and applications."

Virtually every data centre uses equipment from a variety of different storage and server hardware vendors, and these vendors each provide tools to manage their own platforms. Unfortunately, the natural result is a proliferation of inconsistent tools and approaches. The Symantec Data Center Foundation provides a single set of market leading solutions that enables companies to simplify their data centres, actively manage and optimise their diverse storage and server assets, and deliver enhanced IT service levels that not only support the business, but actually drive competitive advantage.

"Data centres today are at the breaking point - complexity has run out of control, driving costs up and jeopardising service levels," said Kris Hagerman, senior vice president of the data center management group at Symantec Corporation. "The Symantec Data Center Foundation is the only infrastructure solution that gives customers the best of both worlds - the ability to standardise on a single infrastructure software platform across their entire data centre, while leveraging product offerings that are each best-in-class market leaders to drive optimal utilisation of valuable hardware and labour resources."

Key elements of Symantec Data Center Foundation strategy include:

Unrivalled Cross-Platform Support

The Symantec Data Center Foundation is designed to support all major open systems UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms, including Solaris, Solaris Opteron, HP-UX, AIX, Red Hat Linux, Novell SUSE Linux and Windows, as well as popular server virtualisation technologies for these OS environments. Also supported are all major enterprise and modular storage hardware platforms from EMC, HDS, HP, IBM, Sun, Network Appliance and other vendors. Additionally, the Symantec Data Center Foundation is optimised for use with Oracle, DB2, Sybase, SAP, Oracle Applications (including Siebel and PeopleSoft), BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere and hundreds of other applications.

Products and Programs to Drive Standardisation

Symantec is announcing a comprehensive new set of products to help customers standardise their data centre infrastructure, to enable them to increase their service levels while actually driving down operational cost. These include innovative new offerings in Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0, the next generation of its leading storage management and virtualisation technology, and the introduction of Veritas Server Foundation, a family of products that provides industry-leading configuration management, provisioning and clustering capabilities. In addition, Symantec will introduce programs that make it simple and affordable for customers to deploy the Symantec Data Center Foundation as their data centre standard.

In contrast to dozens of different point tools from different vendors, the Symantec Data Center Foundation uses a common integration platform. Elements of this common platform are already deployed across multiple products in the Symantec Data Center Foundation. As the platform expands over time, it will provide a consistent experience across Symantec Data Center Foundation product families in such areas as sign-on process, install process, license management, reporting, workflow, user interface, CMDB integration and directory integration. Highlighted in the latest release of the Symantec Data Center Foundation is new license management technology, providing customers with a single, consistent way to manage Symantec license entitlements in their environments.

Built to Enable IT Service Management

The Symantec Data Center Foundation is designed to support core IT service management processes, including capacity management, configuration management, security management, availability management and IT service continuity management. Unlike view-only consoles and monitoring tools, the Symantec Data Center Foundation enables systems owners and administrators to actively manage and address problems as they occur. For example, Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 will enable storage administrators to quickly identify the impact of a storage-related problem on particular servers and applications, then go directly to the affected systems to take action.

The Symantec Data Center Foundation includes:

Veritas NetBackup
The market-leading Veritas NetBackup product family delivers enterprise data protection from the data center to the remote office and includes management tools to maximise administrator productivity. NetBackup 6.0 includes the NetBackup Operations Manager, which allows administrators to efficiently manage hundreds or even thousands of backup jobs and policies from a central browser-based console. Veritas CommandCentral Service, now part of the NetBackup product family, provides business-level reporting and gives senior IT managers the in-depth reporting and compliance visibility they require. In addition, Symantec recently announced NetBackup PureDisk which protects remote office data without the need for tape drives, tape media, or skilled IT staff at the remote site.

Veritas Storage Foundation
The Veritas Storage Foundation family includes Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0, the next generation version of the industry leading Veritas storage management product family, incorporating Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas File System and Veritas CommandCentral Storage. Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 transforms the management of storage infrastructure by providing end-to-end visibility across multi-platform server and storage environments, new levels of control over host and storage network management, increased mobility of data across servers and storage, and enhanced availability of mission critical applications.

Veritas Server Foundation
The Veritas Server Foundation is a new product family that combines configuration management, server provisioning and clustering into a solution that enables IT to discover the server and application assets in their data centre, track any changes to those assets, automate repetitive and error-prone tasks to effectively manage those servers, and help ensure maximum application availability.

Veritas i3 Application Performance Management
Veritas i3 application performance management solutions helps customers ensure the application environment is performing optimally through all levels of the infrastructure - from the client to the storage.

Services for Symantec Data Center Foundation
Symantec Global Services provides a comprehensive portfolio of advisory, enablement and expert on-site service offerings designed to fully leverage and complement the capabilities of Symantec Data Center Foundation, enabling customers to standardise their data centres and improve data centre manageability and effectiveness. Symantec's expanded services offerings include Data Center Migration and Tiered Storage services to drive down IT infrastructure costs, Data Center Re-engineering services for increased business agility, Critical Business Application Services for increased data and application availability, and comprehensive Data Center Risk Assessments to reduce IT risks. More information on Symantec service offerings can be found at

Product Availability
The latest versions of the products included in Symantec Data Center Foundation are scheduled to be generally available in calendar Q2 and Q3, 2006, through Symantec's direct sales force, enterprise VAR channel, system integrators, and select OEM partners.
