Aldi offers PC special

Cut-price German supermarket chain, Aldi, has once again pulled the rug from under the computer reseller channel, offering cut-price Medion systems through its retail outlets in Sydney and Melbourne.

Although computers do not form part of its regular stock, the retail chain kicked off its foray into the PC reselling arena with Medion notebooks on April 1.

The availability of the new systems was announced via the company's website on the morning of September 9. According to the site, the special concludes when stocks run out. This is only the third time Aldi has offered computers as part of its Thursday specials. However, if previous experience is anything to go by most of the systems may sell out on day one.

Aldi will not reveal either figures regarding how many systems will be made available, or which outlets they might be available through.

Nonetheless, managing director of the Australian branch of German-based PC and notebook vendor Medion, Gregor Acshoff, said the company used Aldi supermarkets to resell its systems because it purchased several thousand systems at a time.

"We need minimal orders runs of one or two thousand, and there are not many retailers who can move units in those numbers," he said.

Advertised for $1699, the Medion Titanium MD8083 systems come with a 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and media-rich features such as wireless network access, digital VCR functions, time shifted TV playback, movie storage and editing, surround sound for DVD movies, and multi-screen connections.

Although the boxes themselves are normally bundled with a keyboard and a remote control, the advertised special includes a Tevion 19 inch flat-screen monitor and Medion optical mouse. While Thursday special prices do apply to Tevion 19 inch flat-screen monitor and Medion optical mouse, they do have to be bought separately, and are not bundled with the Medion Titanium MD8083 or included in the price of $1699.

The systems are backed with a 12-month warranty and feature a 1300 hotline.
