GPS improves road safety

 • 01 October, 2004 09:42

New Product: GPS Road Safety Warning System
RRP: $299
Available: November 2004

Uniden anticipates its new GPS road safety warning system
will help reduce the road toll this holiday season. The affordable and portable GPS 301 uses satellite-based global positioning technology to warn drivers of danger spots that are typically identified with fixed pole speed cameras, fixed red light cameras and black spots.

Strengthening its position as a leader of communication products, Uniden’s new GPS units combine the sophistication and precision of GPS technology with practical products for everyday use.

For those people who spend long hours on the road or who have trouble maintaining their speed levels, the GPS 301 is an invaluable device. Compact and convenient, it simply adheres to the driver’s window to operate as an early warning system and an easy-to-use directional system.

Offering nationwide coverage, the GPS 301 is pre-programmed with all the fixed speed cameras, fixed red light cameras and black spots that exist throughout Australia*. As the vehicle approaches these locations, the GPS unit alerts the driver through a three stage visual and audible warning system.

When approaching a fixed speed camera, warnings occur at approximately 800 metres, 400 metres and 160 metres to encourage the driver to slow down. Users can also add and delete up to 500 personal locations or points of interest.

With more than 5000 pre-programmed Australian and New Zealand cities and suburbs, and a built-in electronic compass, the GPS 301 provides basic direction to a nominated destination. Users simply select their destination from the menu and a directional arrow will display on the screen, providing a useful feature for long haul or interstate road trips.

The GPS 301 also operates as a trip computer, using the LCD screen to display information. This includes the current speed, average speed, maximum speed reached and estimated time to reach the destination.

Due for release in November, the GPS 301 will be available for $299 rrp from leading electrical suppliers and department stores.

For those who want the convenience and mobility of a UHF radio with the benefits of GPS technology, Uniden also offers the GPS 205 handheld UHF radio with GPS navigation system ($369 rrp) and the GPS 105 in-car UHF radio with GPS navigation ($499 rrp).
