SnapGear® Offers New Software System To Manage Thousands of Secure Internet Connections

 • 22 October, 2003 10:24

Software Enables Centralized Control of Networks with Thousands of Intrusion Detection Systems, VPNs, Firewalls, and DMZs

Brisbane, Australia - October 22, 2003 - SnapGear Inc., a leader in embedded Linux security, today announced the availability of a new low-cost Central Management System (CMS) for all its security appliances that enables network administrators to quickly configure, monitor and apply security upgrade patches to thousands of Internet security routers from a central management console.

"With security a growing concern for our SMB and enterprise hosting customers, we're installing hundreds of new managed VPN servers every month, each with a SnapGear VPN firewall appliance," said Craig Rodenberg, director of Information Security for The Planet, one of the world's largest managed security hosting providers with 10,000 servers under management. "SnapGear's new CMS allows a ten-fold reduction in the time it takes us to manage, configure and upgrade our huge base of installed routers."

SnapGear's new CMS software helps businesses slash system administration overhead, improve security and simplify management of many devices through:

Simultaneous and automated upgrade of security patches and router OS versions across all devices in a data center or enterprise;
Single point of administration and analysis for alerts, management and tracking of security incidents without requiring systems administrators to manage individual devices;
Single point to administer security policies for all devices in a specific geographic location or across distributed enterprise workgroups;
Automatic monitoring of the health of security devices.
SnapGear's CMS is certified to run on RedHat Linux, Debian Linux, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP. However, SnapGear expects that CMS will run on any platform that supports the Java Runtime Engine 1.4 such as other Linux distributions, Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX platforms. Current SnapGear customers will be able to seamlessly crossover to CMS with the same familiar and consistent management console interface.

SnapGear's CMS distribution includes the standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) toolset for embedded Linux. This capability enables the use of standard management information bases such as HP OpenView and IBM Netview to track interface status, data throughput and information routing. CMS uses SNMP version 2 to manage all SnapGear routers with a flash version of 1.8 or higher. This includes all models in the SME VPN/Firewall family as well as the PCI630 VPN firewall PCI card.

"Internet hosting providers need to manage thousands of secure Internet connections cost effectively," said Rick Stevenson, CEO of SnapGear. "Our CMS system brings down the cost of advanced security services available to users of our appliance security solutions."

Centralized management is a critical component for future growth in hosted security, according to Joshua Beil, VP of Research and Development for Tier 1 Research.

"Hosting providers like The Planet are using SnapGear's centrally managed VPN system to bring higher-end hosting services like managed firewall and managed VPN hosting to mass market hosting pricing levels," Beil said. "When hosting providers can offer these types of security services for below $150 a month, their addressable market significantly increases."

In addition to hosting, SnapGear is also targeting enterprise customers that use dozens or hundreds of firewalls within an organization to provide different levels of security for departmental workgroups, wireless devices and remote telecommuters. The SnapGear solution scales effectively from two units to thousands.

Pricing for CMS starts at A$1,449 (inc GST) for up to 25 users or A$5,769 (inc GST) for unlimited users. CMS is availability immediately through SnapGear resellers worldwide.
