MS unleashes bug beta

The update - officially referred to as a service pack - was posted in beta form on Microsoft's MSDN Web site for developers last Friday and is due to ship sometime this summer. A Microsoft spokesman said the software vendor still recommends that users deploy Windows 2000 now and add Service Pack 1 when it becomes available, instead of waiting for the bug-fix update.

The problems addressed in the bug-fix release are relatively minor, said Joe Clabby, an analyst at Aberdeen Group Inc. in Boston. "The base-level (Windows 2000) operating environment is working pretty damn well," Clabby said.

But he added that companies should test how well Windows 2000 works with their servers and peripherals and then decide whether to hold off on installing the operating system until Service Pack 1 is ready for release.

Unlike with Windows NT 4.0, service packs for Windows 2000 are expected to be mainly bug fixes and will not add major new features to the software.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
