Grand Theft Auto IV sells 6 million, breaks launch records

Beats Halo 3

Apparently, this Grand Theft Auto IV game is all the rage right now.

Take-Two Interactive Wednesday announced that Grand Theft Auto IV has sold an impressive 6 million copies in its first week (3.6 million on launch day), totally $US500 million in revenues. This sets a new dollar value record for day one and week one sales, the company said.

"Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date," said Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two.

The same honour was previously held by Halo 3 last fall, and before that, Spiderman 3 last summer.

"This game sets a new standard in the industry," added Take-Two CEO Ben Feder, "with critics hailing it as both an artistic and technological masterpiece."
