Harris Technology to open retail in Qld, ACT
- 08 July, 2002 12:45
The Harris Technology machine marches on according to outgoing managing director and founder Ron Harris. The company has selected premises for two new retail shopfronts in Brisbane and Canberra.
Although the specific street addresses are being kept under wraps, the Coles Myer subsidiary will reside on "major thoroughfares," Harris said. The strategy has already proved successful, with Harris Technology's two existing "anchor" stores in Sydney's North Ryde and Melbourne's Abbotsford suburbs.
It is not the first time Harris Technology has flagged its intentions to move into the Canberra market. In November last year, Harris Technology selected a site for a new retail operation but the move was foiled when "[the site] was snapped up by someone else," Harris said.
The stores themselves will be based largely on the two existing outlets -- open seven days a week, with local stock on site and full customer service.
The opening of additional retail outlets follows Coles Myer's aggressive retail expansion plans which saw it recently open kiosk-style technology centres in Officeworks and Kmart stores.
Originally slated to resign on June 30, 2002, upon the completion of his contract with Coles Myer, Ron Harris rescheduled his official retirement for July 26.
Harris is still looking forward to taking a more backseat role at Harris Technology, but "can provide assistance if I'm called on", he told ARN.
Being groomed for the role since March is long-time Coles Myer employee David Foster. Former manager of Coles Myer's Liquorland operations, Foster was also involved in the Vintage Cellars online division
