Sony PlayStation 3 gains ABC iView access

Full iView functionality now available on your big-screen TV

Owners of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 3 Slim consoles now have access to the same ABC iView video streaming service that can be watched on a PC.

Available with the latest PlayStation 3 firmware update, the iView service is accessible through a new Television option in the PlayStation's XMB interface. Users must use the PlayStation 3's wireless game controller to navigate the service, as the system's Bluetooth remote control does not yet work.

The iView service currently streams both Flash and H.264 video content, with Flash video being noticeably poorer in quality. The ABC is aiming to offer only H.264 content by the end of the year, with the 600kbps bit-rate video offering significant quality improvements and the opportunity for high-definition resolutions.

ABC iView content is currently un-metered when accessed with a range of Internet service providers such as Westnet, iiNet, Internode and Adam Internet. Anyone accessing the content from an ISP that does not allow quota-free iView access should be careful, as a one-hour show streamed from iView consumes around 250MB of bandwidth.
