Sony has announced that its water and dust resistant Xperia Tablet Z will be available in Australia from next month in both Wi-Fi and 4G variants.
The company revealed that online pre-orders for the Xperia Tablet Z are open from today, with the device available through "leading retailers" from Thursday 6 June.
Sony will sell the Xperia Tablet Z in Australia in three variants, a Wi-Fi-only model in 16GB and 32GB storage capacities and a 4G model with 16GB of storage. These variants of the device will retail for $539, $649 and $679, respectively. The tablet is available in both black and white models.
Announced globally back in February at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show in Barcelona, Spain, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is a 10.1in Android tablet. The device is just 6.9mm thick, making it thinner than the Apple iPad mini and the thinnest 10in tablet on the market. It follows a similar design ethos to the Xperia Z smartphone.
Sony Australia's marketing manager, Jun Yoon, said the "Xperia Tablet Z has received an incredibly positive response since it was first announced at MWC."
According to Sony, the Xperia Tablet Z can be submerged in up to one metre of water for 30mins.The device weighs just 495g and has an LED-backlit LCD with a resolution of 1920x1200, giving it a pixel density of 224ppi.
The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core 1.5GHZ processor and 2GB of RAM. There's also a microSD card slot to expand that memory, which will be welcome news to Android fans.
Other features include an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera that includes a backside-illuminated sensor that aims to capture better low light images, a front-facing 2.2-megapixel camera for video calls and a non-removable 6000mAh battery which claims up to eight hours of Wi-Fi web browsing.
