AusRegistry drops net.au pricing to $1 for the month of May

The $1 net.au domain names can be purchased through AusRegistry's retail partners.
AusRegistry, the company tasked with operating the .au domain namespace, has dropped the price of net.au domain names to $1. The promotion will run throughout the month of May, and it has been done to encourage take-up of net.au names for Australian businesses that may have missed out on a relevant com.au domain name.
In a statement, general manager for naming services at AusRegistry, George Pongas, explained that there is greater availability in the net.au space. Mr Pongas said “businesses are likely to get the domain name they want and can even supplement it with generic word domain names related to their industry or market vertical”.
AusRegistry claims there are currently 2.8 million .au addresses in use, but only a relatively small number of these (294,486) are net.au — up to 86 per cent of .au domain names are in the com.au space. AusRegistry hopes more businesses will embrace the net.au name, especially those that don’t currently have a proper .au domain name but instead use services such as Tumblr, Facebook or Blogger for their Web presence.
Mr Pongas said the company’s research shows “Australians trust websites ending in .au as they identify that the domains belong to Australian businesses”. The $1 offer is meant to encourage businesses that don’t have a .au domain to snap one up and “get a professional web presence with a short and memorable net.au domain name”.
The sale of $1 net.au domain names (which are valid for two years) is being handled by AusRegistry’s retail partners, which can be found at the Web site getyour.net.au. Regular retail pricing can be up to $18 per year.
