Underdog Sony aims to grow its smartphone market share with an inexpensive 5-inch smartphone, the Xperia E4.
Specifications for the E4 indicate it will rival Motorola’s popular Moto G and Microsoft’s Lumia 635, smartphones priced at $269 and $279, respectively.
The smartphone bundles a modest 5-inch, qHD screen with a 2300 milliamp-battery to deliver “up to two days of battery life”.
Inside is a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. A microSD slot makes it possible to expand memory by an additional 32GB.
The smartphone has a 5-megapixel rear- and 2-megapixel front-facing camera.
Exact pricing for the Xperia E4 has yet to be announced. In a press release, Sony Mobile’s Oceania managing director, Peter McKeon, described the smartphone’s pricing as ‘highly-competitive’.
The Xperia E4 has been announced ahead of the Mobile World Congress, the global trade show in which Sony is expected to announce a new range of flagship smartphones, along with rival HTC, and Samsung at its Unpacked event.
