Woolworths and Telstra partner on new mobile service

Re-enters the MVNO space following its partnership with Optus

Woolworths will re-enter the mobile space as a mobile virtual network operator on parts of Telstra’s 3G network.

The two companies signed a wholesale agreement allowing Woolworths to resell parts of Telstra’s network using the 850MHz and 2100MHz spectrum bands.

These 3G bands cover 98.5 per cent of the Australian population with reception.

The service will likely rival that offered by supermarket chain Aldi, which is also an MVNO using the Telstra network.

Woolworths previously offered mobile services on the Optus network until the carrier chose not to renew the agreement.

Details on Woolworths’ services and pricing are expected to be revealed in “the coming weeks”.
