For years Apple have stood firmly by the use of single button mice for their computers. But in the Mighty mouse, they have finally made the switch to a two-button design and have delivered a comfortable, quality peripheral that is sure to be appreciated by Mac users.

The Mighty Mouse looks almost exactly like a single button Apple mouse with a tiny scroll wheel. But beneath the surface are two touch sensitive buttons that detect the users clicks and distinguishes between the left or right buttons. This technology has allowed Apple to keep the shape of their original mouse while at the same time adding some extra buttons and a long awaited scroll wheel.

We were skeptical when we first opened the Mighty Mouse, but it has to be said that we experienced absolutely no problems with the touch sensitive buttons, as it does an excellent job of distinguishing between left and right mouse clicks.

The left and right sides of the Mighty Mouse house two function buttons, but unfortunately they have not been placed in a comfortable position. The side buttons are too far up the sides,, meaning pressing them required us to reposition our hand on the mouse, which is a major inconvenience.

Using the supplied software, users can program each button to open certain functions within Mac OS X, including launching the Dashboard, showing all windows, revealing the desktop and switching applications. We found these options very convenient and depending on your preferences, not having to lift your hand off the mouse to open certain programs is an excellent attribute.

The Mighty Mouse scroll wheel is perhaps the best feature of the device. Very small in size, the scroll wheel which can be used both vertically and horizontally is extremely responsive, comfortable and a delight to use. It also acts as an extra button when clicked in and can be programmed from within the System Preferences menu of your computer.

The Mighty Mouse is compatible with Windows XP, but some functions that are available on Mac OS X do not function on a Windows platform,. We would like to see a Bluetooth version, which eliminates the need for cords. Like many other Apple peripheral products, the Mighty Mouse suffers from an extremely short cord and can be an inconvenience.
