    3.75 / 5

  • Cheap
  • Wide compatibility

  • Functional but unexceptional audio
  • Could be more comfortable

Bottom Line

I can’t wait to see what a beefier and more-accomplished console play from the company looks like, this budget-friendly headset is a good stopgap in the meantime.

Would you buy this?

The Pitch

HyperX have a formula. It’s not a particularly complicated one, but it’s not hard to see the appeal. Do what the competition do. Do it cheaper and, where possible, do it better.

In the past, the company have applied that model to the PC gaming space. But with their new Cloud Stinger Core, HyperX look to challenge console-bound incumbents. Brands like like Turtle Beach and Astro.

Look, Feel and Features

The HyperX Cloud Core Stinger is as much a console gaming headset as it is an entry-level one. Right up-front, it’s designed for console gamers on a budget. Both in form and function, the focus is more on essentials than luxuries here. From the adjustable steel headband to the 40mm drivers and the noise-cancelling mic.

If you’re after the essentials for your next console gaming session, the Core Stinger ticks all the boxes. If you’re someone who expects more premium headphones experience, this isn’t it. It isn’t. There's no plush leatherette. There's no memory foam. There's no texture or finish to thing. There's not even any RGB lighting. In looks and feel, the Cloud Core Stinger is as bare-bones as these things come.

Likewise, the sound quality of the Cloud Core Stinger wasn’t all that compelling. It got the job done but I fast found myself missing the fidelity available elsewhere. Compared to alternatives, the Stinger sounded timid, even at the highest volume settings.

Still, for what it is, you do get quite a bit for the low entry price. What's more, it's compatible with every gaming console out there - from PC to mobile to Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch. It’s also particularly light at 215g, which made wearing it a treat over longer play sessions. Unfortunately, the loose fit also allowed for a lot of external noise pollution.

The Bottom Line

The Cloud Stinger Core is a HyperX product through and through.

While I can’t wait to see a beefier console play from HyperX, this is a budget-friendly stopgap in the meantime.
