Worst game character makeovers of all time

It's a normal process -- video game characters are constantly changing. From Mario to Marcus Fenix, characters always undergo visual facelifts in order to "update" the series' look. But good taste is not always used when these changes are made.

New Play Control! Pikmin

Late last year, Nintendo announced the New Play Control series -- GameCube games refitted with Wii controls and a lower price tag -- and there was much scoffing. After a pretty meager Summer/Fall/Winter lineup, this is what Nintendo had up their sleeve? Reheated leftovers? Adding insult to injury, GameCube games already playable on the Wii? But when you think about it, this whole New Play Control thing might not be a bad idea. Bringing forgotten gems from the company's worst-selling home console (save Virtual Boy) to what will probably be its best is a great way to introduce new gamers to great Nintendo titles they may have missed. And there are few GameCube games greater than Pikmin.

In pictures: Tekken 6

The popular Tekken arcade fighting series has finally returned with Namco Bandai's Tekken 6. Boasting a total of 42 characters — the most seen so far — Tekken 6 introduces new features to revitalise the ageing genre, including the ability to use items as weapons. Character customisation has been rolled over from the game's predecessor, Tekken 5, allowing you to alter your character with various items and costumes. The game is headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year.

New Chronicles of Riddick game nears completion

The fate of the new Chronicles of Riddick game has never been entirely stable but it looks like its release is almost upon us. Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena follows on from the events in Escape from Butcher Bay, putting you in the shoes of Riddick once again as he escapes from prison. The new game will include a remade version of its predecessor with improved graphics when it is released, allowing you to play both games back to back. Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is scheduled for release next month on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Street Fighter IV - with vengeance

Street Fighter IV is the latest addition to the acclaimed series which first graced the coin-op arcades in 1987, and marks arguably the best title release amid a wavering history of productions both good and bad.

DualSim Slider

According to the company behind the DualSim Slider, it is the first mobile phone available in Australia to support the use of two SIM cards simultaneously. Unfortunately, it is let down by a mediocre "Magic Touch" control system.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
