Home-made spam filter

Here's a great way to filter out junk e-mail, suggested by PC World reader Anthony Ferrer. Since most spammers send their messages to mailing lists, just set your mail client to reject any message not intended for you personally.

Alternate row shading

One way to make your data legible is to apply cell shading to every other row in a range. In Excel 97 or later, select the range and choose Format-Conditional Formatting. In the Conditional Formatting dialogue box, select Formula Is from the drop-dow...

Simplify Word 97's interface

If you're like most people, there are many Word 97 menu commands and toolbar options you never use. Wouldn't it be convenient if you could strip down Word's baroque interface to suit your needs and dump the dross? You can.

Easy driver updates

Windows Update, a utility that connects to a database of the latest device drivers on Microsoft's Web site, can simplify driver updates, provided you use Windows 98.

Convert bitmaps to icons

You can turn any .bmp file into an icon simply by changing its extension to .ico. Click the bitmap file you want to change, select File-Rename, and then replace the .bmp extension with .ico. Press <Enter>, and Windows will immediately replace the app...

Cope with an overcrowded screen

Windows screens get cluttered fast, especially if you're working on an older machine or laptop system that forces you to work in 640 x 480 resolution. Here are some coping strategies.

Relocate wallpaper files

Wallpaper graphics are a great way to customise your desktop. Unfortunately, Windows drops wallpaper files into the Windows folder, amid the million other files located there. In IE 4 and Windows 98, Microsoft has added a folder just for wallpaper fi...

McAfee utilities just don't get along

The McAfee Office suite is a tempting buy. For less than $200 you get a grab bag of ten separate, free-standing utilities -- including VirusScan, Nuts & Bolts 98, and Guard Dog -- that would cost hundreds of dollars if purchased separately. However, ...

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
