  • Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2008: 10 copies to be WON
The Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2008 is due to hit stores in April for a recommended retail price of $35.00. However, we’re giving 10 lucky readers the chance to win a copy of the book! To enter, simply answer the following question: Who currently holds the Guinness World Record high score for Donkey Kong? (Gamer’s Tip: the answer is in the slideshow.) The first 10 correct answers e-mailed to Chris_Jager@idg.com.au will win.
  • Lara busted
For example, did you know that the legendary bust size of Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft was the result of a programming error? Apparently, the game’s graphic artist accidentally set the character’s chest dimensions to 150 per cent. When other members of the team saw the pneumatic results, they insisted that the proportions be kept. This is just one of hundreds of interesting titbits (ahem) scattered throughout the book.
  • ‘Mr. Awesome’
Roy Shilt – AKA ‘Mr. Awesome’ – is the world record holder of the arcade game Missile Command. (Apparently, video game high scores can lead to hot cars and girls. Who knew?)
  • And you thought you were really into games…
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Guinness book without an assortment of crazy world records. The Gamer’s Edition includes records for the most people dressed as a videogame character, longest game playing while blindfolded, largest handheld computer game party and the youngest professional games player.
  • That’s a lot of power pellets, Pac-Man
Pac-Man currently holds the Guinness World Record as the most successful coin-operated game of all time. Between 1981 and 1987, over 293,800 Pac-Man cabinets were installed in arcade parlours around the world. It is estimated that the game has been played more than 10 billion times since its creation.
  • Gamer’s Bible
The Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2008 is set to become the official Bible for hardcore gamers across the globe. The 256-page annual features hundreds of world records and more than 600 pictures. It includes an extensive overview of all major video game genres, including in-depth features on groundbreaking titles. If you have an all-time favourite game or character, you’ll probably find out something new about them here.

  • Captain Donkey Kong
In addition to many brand-new world records for modern console games, the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition includes plenty of veteran arcade machines. The patriotically dressed man above is none other than Billy Mitchell; the current world champ at Donkey Kong. (Mitchell was the real-life villain in the documentary The King of Kong: a Fistful of Quarters. Since the film’s completion, he has overtaken his rival’s score. Boo-hiss!)

Most hardcore gamers are pretty confident in their gaming abilities; often sporting egos that rival the size of their games collection. But idle boasting and trash-talk will only get you so far. If you truly want to prove your mettle in the gaming arena, then getting your name in the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition is the only way to go about it. In association with world gaming authority Twin Galaxies, the Guinness World Records committee has compiled its first annual Gamer’s Edition.
In addition to listing the high score holders for hundreds of arcade and video games, the book comes packed with more gaming trivia than you can shake a joystick at. For your chance to win this amazing compendium, check out the following slideshow and answer the question at the end.
