Lounge Lizard Ladies: the women of Leisure Suit Larry

An exhaustive gallery of Leisure Suit Larry’s bevy of bodacious beauties: from 1987 to the present.

  • Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude

After an eight year hiatus, the Leisure Suit Larry series eventually returned for another innuendo-laden adventure. This time, Laffer was replaced by a new controllable character — his nephew, Larry Lovett. (The original lounge lizard did make an appearance in the tutorial, however.) The game's college setting offered plenty of puerile shenanigans, including 'panty raids' and sperm directing mini-games. Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude attempted to appeal to adolescent gamers by ramping up the sexual content and nudity. This led to the game receiving significant cuts in the U.S.A, as well as being banned outright in several countries, including Australia.

Box blurb: "With gorgeous co-eds everywhere, college dweeb Larry Lovage is chasing around more than his diploma. He’s trying to live up to the legend of his uncle Larry Laffer, everyone’s favourite polyester playboy. It’s the nest generation of Leisure Suit Larry, with new twists on all the outrageous games and romantic entanglements which made the original such a hilarious hit!”

  • Leisure Suit Larry: Shape Up or Slip Out

Leisure Suit Larry: Shape Up or Slip Out marked a complete series reboot. With Patti out of the picture, Larry was free to pursue his swinger lifestyle once more. The game starts with an ill-fated appearance on a TV dating show, which sees Larry winning a booby prize vacation to the La Costa Lotta Spa resort. There, a bevy of potential conquests await Larry's ardour, including a weight-lifting amazon, a mud bathing tourist, a sexy senorita and a bisexual aerobics instructor. And gamers wonder where they get their grotty reputation from.

A CD-ROM of the game was released a year later, including voice acting — a first for the series.

Box blurb: “As a consolation prize for his humiliating performance on a TV dating show, Larry wins two weeks at the fabulous La Costa Lotta Spa (first prize one week!). Surrounded by nine smart, savvy, beautiful women, Larry will surely meet Ms. Right. Right? WRONG!”

  • Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail!

The sixth game in the series saw a return to the exaggerated cartoony graphics of old. This time around, Larry is on a cruise ship and must vie for the affections of the comely captain by competing in a series of mini-games. Love for Sail! sported some interesting gimmicks, including a scratch n' sniff card that represented aromas from the game, and the ability to digitise your face and voice into the adventure. The women in the game were all spoofs of famous celebrities (Drew Baringmore, Jamie Lee Coitus), though the cartoony visuals made for a rather weak parody.

Curiously, a mobile phone version of Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail! was released in 2007. Naturally, the risque content was significantly toned down.

Box blurb: “Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail follows the dating trials and tribulations of Larry Laffer, a 38-year-old geek with playboy-like pretensions. In this adventure Larry finds himself on a Cruise Ship called 'PMS Bouncy' containing some of the most beautiful naked women ever to be put in a video game. But Larry 7 offers more than just a sex-throb adventure. For the first time ever, you can actually put your own voice and face into the video game! Scratch and sniff card included.”

  • Leisure Suit Larry III: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals

  • For a character that has been variously described as a ‘dork’, ‘nerd’ and ‘loser’, Larry Laffer sure does seem to get a lot of action from the ladeez. The balding slacker’s smutty exploits in the pursuit of lust and lurve have landed him in all manner of sticky situations (with ‘sticky’ being the operative word).

Despite being derided as the original '40-year old virgin', the titular tit-man actually popped his cherry at the end of the first game, way back in 1987. Since then, he has ended up in the arms of at least one pneumatic beauty at the climax of every sequel — not bad for a pot-bellied lothario with a receding hairline.

To celebrate the impending release of Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, we take a look at some of the pixelated harlots that our lovable loser has dallied with over the years. As the following gallery illustrates, the women in Larry's life have gone from ultra cartoony to racily realistic, before merging into an unusual combination of both. This probably goes to show something, although we're not exactly sure what.

  • Leisure Suit Larry III: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals

The third game in the series added some additional feminine spice to the formula via the introduction of Passionate Patti. In the latter half of the adventure, players take on the role of Patti, who has fallen hopelessly (and implausibly) in love with Larry Laffer. It lead to an interesting role reversal, with the (mostly male) audience attempting to woo the 'man' of their dreams. It could almost be said that Leisure Suit Larry III furthered gender equality in gaming — if it wasn't for the fact that Patti kept losing her clothes.

Box blurb: ”Are you a smooth, suave, single guy on the make, or maybe you fancy yourself the sleek, sexy femme fatale? Whoever you are, get ready for a look at the other side of life. In Sierra's latest 3-D adventure, Lesiure Suit Larry III: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals, you're BOTH!”

  • Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work

Due to an internal misunderstanding, Leisure Suit Larry 4 (posthumously dubbed 'The Lost Floppies') was never released. The 'fifth' game in the series saw the return of Passionate Patti, as well as the dual character approach that sees you role-playing both genders. The game pokes fun at its non-existent predecessor, featuring mystery plot holes and unexplained events that presumably occurred in the fourth game. The story places less emphasis on 'finding love' and instead focuses on a Police Quest-style comedy caper, with Patti now working for the FBI (Aiiiii).

Box blurb: “SEX, THUGS AND ROCK 'N ROLL. They're back in their silliest, sexiest adventure ever. Larry teams up with Passionate Patti for a rollicking gender-bending romp through the sleazy underside of the underworld

SWITCH SEXES ON THE FLY. Yes, every time you take a plane ride, you'll switch back and forth between Larry and Patti. Double the trouble, double the fun!”

  • Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust (forthcoming)

Despite the demise of original publisher Sierra and the non-involvement of creator Andy Lowe, the Leisure Suit Larry series continues to swing. Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust marks a belated debut on next-gen consoles, with the game due to appear on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by the end of March. Early reports suggest that the game has been heavily neutered, featuring none of the risque elements that defined its predecessors. Oh well. At least Australians will get to play it.

  • Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards

This is the game that started it all. Actually, that's a lie. The game that started it all was Softporn Adventure, an earlier Seirra text adventure that was heavily mined by Larry's creator for puzzles and plot elements. Nevertheless, Land of the Lounge Lizards is the first game to star the titular Larry Laffer as he attempts to rid himself of his virginity during a night of misadventure at the Lost Wages resort. After a string of humiliating rejections involving faithful girlfriends, diseased prostitutes and hungry socialites, Larry finally stumbles across the woman of his dreams — who happens to be sitting naked in a hot tub.

An enhanced 256-color VGA version was released in 1991.

Box blurb: “Become the loveable nerd Larry for one fabulous night. You'll dance. You'll drink. You'll gamble. And, if you play your cards right, you might even meet the girl (or girls) of your dreams.”

  • Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (In Several Wrong Places)

Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (In Several Wrong Places) takes place directly after the first game, with the apple of Larry's eye (the appropriately named Eve) deciding that he isn't the man of her dreams after all. Dumped and dateless, Larry sets off to find himself a new lady friend. A lottery win sees the loveable loser's luck change near the start of the game, yet with the bloodthirsty mafia on your tail, a reversal of fortunes was always just a mouse-click away.

Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (In Several Wrong Places) has far less nooky than other entries in the series, leading to loud complaints from sweaty-palmed nerds and perverts.

Box blurb:“On cruise ships, in laid back Los Angeles and in other exotic locations, Larry is suddenly attracting the attention of all kinds of nubile nymphettes. He's been propositioned by a bikini'd babe at the poop-deck pool, suffered the seductions of a sadomasochistic spinster, even played 'hide the onklunk' with a sexy Spanish senorita. Why is it that some of the loveliest ladies in the western hemisphere are so hot to get their hands on Larry — and why is he resisting their advances? Why is it that Larry has suddenly started looking only for Miss 'Right' (as opposed to Miss 'Right-Now') and will he find her? Find out when you play... Looking for Love (in several wrong places)."
