Best tech bargains of the week: November 6
Grab yourself a bargain as we begin the countdown to Christmas! This week you can choose from two great Panasonic and Nikon digital cameras, a large and powerful Dell notebook, a Sony Full HD camcorder, the latest TomTom GPS units, a Nokia smartphone and much, much more!
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ7 digital camera Price: $594 (Save: $220) Panasonic's Travel Zoom digital cameras are small, yet pack plenty of zoom. The [[artnid:304914|LUMIX TZ7]] in particular has a 12x zoom lens to go along with its 10-megapixel sensor. It takes wonderfully clear pictures and has a slew of features to play with, including face recognition memory. Using this feature, you can register people's faces and give them priority so that they will always be in focus. [[xref:http://www.retravision.com.au/CatalogueDetail.aspx?catalogue=442|Retravision]] sells the LUMIX TZ7 for $594, which is a saving of $220 since we first reviewed it back in May (see page 11 of the Retravision catalogue). Plus an 8GB SD card is thrown in free of charge.
Nikon D300 digital SLR camera Price: $2340 (Save: $659) The [[artnid:150216|Nikon D300]] received high praise when we tested it back in late 2007, but we didn't like its high price tag. With the release of the newer D300s model, retailers are running out old stock of the D300 for significantly reduced prices. You can score one (body only) for $2340, making this a good deal if you already have some Nikon lenses or can find other cheap deals.
Nokia E63 mobile phone Price: $199 (Save: $200) The [[artnid:276918|Nokia E63]] is a cut-price version of the E71. It lacks HSDPA-connectivity and built-in GPS but retains much of the Nokia E71's design, including a full QWERTY keyboard. If you're on a budget and can live without super-fast mobile Internet speeds then it is definitely worth a look. [[xref:http://store.vodafone.com.au/nokia-e63-29-flexi-cap-recharge-offer.aspx?pid=homepage-flash_e63|Vodafone is slashing the price of the E63]] when combined with a pre-paid plan — you can pick it up for just $199, a saving of $200 off the RRP.
Virgin Mobile Wi-Fi modem [[artnid:324937|Virgin Mobile's Wi-Fi modem]] is a battery-powered Wi-Fi modem that allows up to three devices to connect to it wirelessly for shared mobile broadband access. Despite the flaky Optus network, this is still a very nifty device that's convenient to use and portable. We think its decent value, even at its regular RRP of $199 — so much so that we awarded it a Best Buy. The real value though is [[xref:http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4af34e350485bcda273fc0a87e0106bc/Product/View/E6939|Dick Smith's offer]] of 10GB of data for $149, with a 365-day expiration. This special offer is only available until 30 November.
Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite Pack Price: $649 (Save: $210) The [[artnid:192975|Xbox 360 Elite]] is Microsoft's answer to Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3). It has all the functionality of the original Xbox 360, with the added bonus of native HDMI, a 120GB hard drive and a slick black finish. When it was originally released, the Xbox 360 Elite cost $649. You can buy it today [[xref:http://www.jbhifi.com.au/games/microsoft/x-box/360|from JB Hi-Fi for just $439]]. As an added bonus, the JB Hi-Fi Xbox 360 Elite Pack comes bundled with three games: Pure, Assassin's Creed and the family friendly Lego Batman.
Navman MY30 GPS unit [[artnid:320396|Navman's MY30 GPS unit]] is a budget, entry-level GPS unit that counts lane guidance and 3D landmarks amongst its features. There are no advanced features like Bluetooth and live traffic updates, but [[xref:http://www.harveynorman.com.au/m/navman-my30-gps.html|Harvey Norman solves the latter]] — at just $50 extra on top of the RRP, you can pick up a MY30 with a bonus live traffic dongle accessory and three years worth of free map upgrades. Considering the [[xref: http://ausstore.navmanstores.com/Traffic%20TMC/MY%20TMC___493.htm|traffic antenna]] retails for $149, this is a great deal.
Sony HDR-XR200 Full HD camcorder Price: $2699 (Save: $400) The [[artnid:301445|Sony HDR-XR200]] is a gadget-laden show-stopper of a camcorder with plenty of advanced features under the hood. Some of the highlights include a 12-megapixel still image mode, a massive 240GB hard drive and built-in GPS functionality. Originally retailing for $2699, the Sony HDR-XR200 can be [[xref:http://binglee.com.au/Hard+Disk+Camcorders/3998/Sony+HDRXR520V+Hi+Def+HDD+Handycam|purchased from Bing Lee for less than $2299]] — this price is negotiable, which means you will save a minimum of $400.
Dell Inspiron 15 laptop Price: $796 (Save: $203) If you want a large and powerful notebook for the home or office, then you can't go wrong with [[artnid:319299|Dell's Inspiron 15]]. It has a 15.6in screen, a 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 CPU, 3GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. It's great for Internet and office tasks and it's very inexpensive. [[xref:http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Computers-and-Monitors/Notebooks-and-Laptops/DE560627BK|Officeworks]] is selling it for $796, which is a saving of $203 since we first reviewed it back in September.
